I share your experiences as I myself as a kid have rigged my pair of slippers; with safety pins, wires and nails. Our parents have high expectations on those slippers and assumed their life lasts for a school year. Siguro nga pag di natin isusuot it might last that long, kasi they did not take into consideration the excessive wear and tear we put on them. If a student walked from section 2 to the school and ran with it too because they play “toxin”…that poor pair of slippers is ruined before the end of the day. Sa talas ba naman ba ng mga bato sa daan lalu na kung bagong maintain ng pison. Kundi man at maputik ang daan and that slipper get stuck on the mud, when you managed to dislodge it—putol ang tsinelas. So, like some of you, I managed to make it to the class barefooted…lucky me, nasa section 3 kami noon so it was not much of a suffering.
I was deployed in Kuwait before September 11, 2001 and as “Operations Enduring Freedom” winded down, we held a Volleyball tournament and I played. The peripheries of the sand court were layers of peeble stones preventing the sands from being blown or washed away. In one of the plays the ball went out of bounds so I went to retrieve it, that’s when I said shit, shit, f----! … the bottom of my feet hurt—it gave me flashbacks how tough my feet was before and how soft I become not being able to handle those little stones.
If there’s one thing that experiences in Acoje can teach us…“having nothing does not make us a lesser person…”

Hi Kuya Boy, I can relate with your experience sa "slippers". Sa akin nga di lang safety pins and nails ang ginamit ko.Tinatahi ko pa ito para lang magamit ko ulit at magtagal pa ang serbisyo nya.Dahil nga sa kahirapan kaya lahat ginawa ko.And in that way I can do my modest part to help my parents with their budget.Dami kasi naming magkakapatid eh and my late father was the only provider in our family and I salute him for being such a great Dad who really supported us to the best he can.And I would say that " whatever I am now and whatever I hope to be... I owe it all to Acoje and to my parents of course especially to my Dad... I miss you 'tay...
