What is a follicular neoplasm?

Follicular neoplasms are thyroid nodules that may be benign or may be a form of thyroid cancer. This situation occurs when samples from a fine needle aspiration biopsy of a nodule reveal clusters of increased numbers of epithelial cells grouped together in specific patterns with small amounts of colloid present. This configuration marks a nodule as a particular kind of growth that is referred to as a follicular neoplasm. If the cells that have grown to form this nodule remain contained within a thin capsule of tissue that surrounds it, it is a benign thyroid nodule called a follicular adenoma. Alternatively, if the cells grow to penetrate the capsule of tissue to invade normal thyroid tissue or blood vessels within the thyroid gland, it is malignant, representing a form of thyroid cancer called follicular thyroid cancer.

It is not possible to distinguish a follicular adenoma from follicular thyroid cancer on the basis of a fine needle aspiration biopsy sample. To make a definitive diagnosis, it is necessary to surgically remove the nodule so that it can be cut into sections and examined under a microscope to look for any evidence of invasion of normal thyroid tissue or blood vessels.

I just went to St. Lukes this afternoon to visit Deb`s and am glad to tell everyone that shes in good shape, although the test was not yet realesed but the first impression of her fellow Docs sounds good. BENIGN as they say,,
Medyo maga pa nga lang ng konti and fears na maybe may blood cloth yata, am not sure about it and if it happens sabi doc baka open daw ulit pero overall in general shes fine ``and am happy to tell you na ANDALDAL NA ULIT even may gauze pa sa leeg ^^..

The operation normally is being done in one hour or less. Pero in my case, it took my surgeons 4 hours. I was told later that the mass occupied almost the entire thyroid and it was really adherent, kaya nahirapan silang tanggalin. On frozen section the mass was BENIGN and NOT MALIGNANT although the final histopath will be released after a week pa. They removed my thyroid but left about 2 grams of it, the amoutn of which might be sufficient to supply me thyroid hormone so I dont need to take thyroid hormone replacement for life.

It was just like a dream. I have been in and out of the Operating Room of St Lukes but not as a patient. Its entirely diffrent to be lying on the bed being pushed inside the main operating room. I felt particularly helpless when I was transferred on the operating table. My anesthesiologist friend said, "I will let you sleep now", as he put on the oxygen mask and started administering IV medications. There I prayed, "God, Thy Will Be Done". I woke up after 7 hours.

And now I am past through it. I was secured by all your prayers.
